10 Pieces of Advice That Have Shaped the KindWorks Team’s Path

About KindWorks
At KindWorks we see advise as a tool, one with valuable lessons that can shape our own paths.

Do you have a piece of advice that you have received and try to apply in your life?

This question served as an icebreaker, or ‘KindStarter’ for one of our KindWorks recent group calls. Our team at KindWorks starts every standup meeting with a ‘KindStarter’ suggested by Beni, a friendly and kind AI agent. The KindStarters have a key ingredient to building a strong and connected team when we are working fully remotely and across the globe.

The answers, as diverse as our team, led us to a conversation about the importance of advice and how it can be used as an act of kindness. The advice that we receive from others often reflects their own experiences, struggles, and triumphs, building our bonds between team members and providing us with valuable lessons that can shape our own paths. And when sharing our own advice, we have an opportunity to see our own journey, value ourselves, be proud of our decisions, and see how those experiences can be used to overcome issues that we might be experiencing in the present.

With that in mind, we compiled some of the advice that we have received and that have helped us shape our path:

Embrace the Journey, Not Just the Destination

One piece of advice that our team members have received is to “Have fun on the journey; don’t just wait for the destination.” Life is not just about reaching goals but about savoring the moments and experiences along the way. This perspective can help us stay present and appreciate the process, finding joy in the small victories and lessons learned, rather than solely focusing on the end result.

There Is Always a Protagonist in Each Story

“Remember that behind every story or situation, there is always a human like you. Be sure you step back and aren’t biased.” This advice highlights the importance of empathy and perspective. Everyone we encounter has their own unique narrative, and by recognizing and respecting these stories, we can approach situations with greater understanding and less judgment.

Authenticity Shines Through

“Be authentic in what you do; that will show your values. Don’t pretend to be something that you are not.” Authenticity is the cornerstone of genuine connections and personal integrity. Staying true to themselves, even when it’s challenging, has helped some of our team members build trust and respect with others.

Giving 100% in Everything You Do

A piece of wisdom from one of our teammates’ grandma: “No matter what work you do, always try to give 100%.” Her advice, demonstrated through her own example, underscores the importance of dedication and effort. By putting their full energy into every task, our team has learned the value of hard work and the satisfaction that comes from doing it.

Value Yourself and Your Contributions

“Don’t undersell yourself; always value what you are and what you do.” This advice has been crucial in building self-confidence and recognizing their worth for some of our team members. Understanding our value can empower us to take on challenges, negotiate fairly, and pursue opportunities that align with our skills and aspirations.

The Art of Saying No

“It’s always important to have priorities and learn that sometimes the answer does not have to be yes.” Knowing when to say no can be a game-changer when managing time and energy. By setting boundaries and focusing on what truly matters, we can maintain balance and avoid burnout.

Imagine Others’ Complexity

“You don’t know what the person is fully going through, and if you imagine their complexity, it’s easy to treat them kindly.” This advice reinforces the importance of compassion and empathy. By considering the complexities of others’ lives, we can be more patient, understanding, and kind.

Be Proactive and Take Risks

“You are more likely to regret the things you didn’t do than the things that you did.” This advice has encouraged some of our teammates to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new opportunities. It’s a call to action to live life fully, take chances, and create meaningful experiences.

The Power of Asking

“I used to be really shy in asking for opportunities. The best thing you can do is to ask; they might say yes. You can see the world the way you see yourself.” This advice has opened doors that one of the KindWorks team members never thought possible. By simply asking, you can find that many opportunities are within reach, and the worst response is often a polite no, which is far less daunting than missed chances.

There Is No Substitute for Hard Work

“There is nothing to replace hard work. Not being afraid of going above and beyond and wearing multiple hats.” This lesson, imparted by our CEO’s dad, underscores the importance of diligence and versatility. By embracing hard work and being willing to take on different roles, we can adapt, excel, and make significant contributions in different areas.
